University Projects

Between 2017 and 2019, I studied Creative Media Production at Bradford College University Centre. By studying my levels 4 and 5, I achieved my HND. During this time I produced a lot of my own content and I was able to help many other students bring their unique filmmaking visions to life.

In 2021, I returned to University to top-up my HND and finish my degree. I studied BA (Hons) in Film and Screen Media at University Centre Leeds which I passed with a 1st class degree.

1) My University Projects

1.1) Creative Collaboration – A Student Documentary

This documentary is my final project that I had to produce for my HND in Creative Media Production. It is a Documentary which covers the topic of student collaboration across different departments exploring the benefits of collaboration and where individual creativity comes from on a project. This is a project that I Directed, Produced, edited, wrote, researched, operated cameras for and did the sound design for.

1.2) Superhero Genre Study

During my first year at University I was tasked with researching a genre of my choosing. Due to my love and passion of superheroes I decided to choose the recently popular superhero genre to study and research.

I first produced a video essay exploring the history of the superhero genre and its comic adaption routes. This research allowed me to appropriately plan and develop my upcoming superhero projects.

The History of the Superhero Genre – Video Essay

The Night-Watchman Trailers

After, I produced a teaser trailer and a full length trailer for a superhero detective noir film, called The Night-Watchman. These trailers had to feature recognisable and identifiable themes from the superhero genre and due to my love of film noir I decided to combine these two styles in my trailers. I made this decision due to my interest in Auteurs, who produce unique content that stands out, as well as understanding that film noir is visually and artistically an easier genre to recognise from its themes, styles and content and is a genre more associated with the Auteur. I also wanted to push my creative side as the Superhero and film noir genres don’t typically come together.

As well as this I produced a short superhero film called Shadowstar which was instructed to be silent, black and white and filmed entirely on a mobile phone. I later produced a separate edit of Shadowstar which included sound.

Shadowstar

Shadowstar attempts to deconstruct the typical superhero genre by focusing on and highlighting the effects of collateral damage caused by a superhero trying to do good and its impact on many innocent civilians. Shadowstar reflects on this as he directly caused the tragedy by intervening. This deconstruction focuses on the mental effects caused by the tragic event and how Shadowstar is now struggling with his life choices and past decisions. The story flashes back to his Origin Story, which he now deems to have been a mistake, and he wishes he had never done experiments on himself. He believes this as he struggles with the idea that if he had never given himself super powers, then his reckless actions would never have caused so many innocent people to lose their lives, when fighting the super villain called Void.

1.3) My World by Code Orange – Animated Lyric Video

During my second year at University I had to animate a lyric video for a song of my choice. I decided I wanted to animate a music video for My World by Code Orange. This process began by creating a mood board so I could visualise the bands themes, style and aesthetic. This was the first time that I had ever animated a project, as well as being the first time that I had explored animation as a medium. This animation is fairly simple but it taught me a lot, especially how time consuming animating is. I have since gone on to explore animation in a lot more depth and I have produced much better and higher quality animation content, such as my animated Mythos Visuals logo.

1.4) Apples and Pears

While at University we got to travel to Malham Cove to make a short film called Apples and Pears written by my good friend, Lewis Fisher. As I had started specialising in Directing in my second year I was able to take the lead on this project and direct this piece. I worked closely with all the other media departments and learnt a lot about the role of a Director. I learnt how to direct actors, direct the sound team to get the best audio capture as well as breaking down the script in order to bring my creative decisions to life and deciding which camera shots and setups I wanted to achieve my creative goal.

Unfortunately as this project was not needed for any of my final submissions and it was purely undertaken for fun, the final edit with music was never completed. I still endeavour to come back to this project and finish it as it was one of my first times Directing on a project.

1.5) Bradford College University Centre Alumni Interview

As part of my studies in my first year at University I was assigned an Alumni, Toby Brown, to interview. This was part of a module I was studying which had us learning about interviews, how they are framed and how they are filmed for projects such as documentaries. I produced two versions of this Interview. The full interview, with all the questions that I asked Toby, and a shorter 3 minute edit which seemed to flow better for the purpose of my assignment and submission.

1.6) Mathilde

During my final year at University, I worked on Mathilde as its Assistant Producer and Sound Recordist. This was submitted as part of my course as my final major project for the year.

2) University Projects I Worked On

2.1) A Place to Lay Your Head

During my second year at University in 2019 a fellow student, Craig Sands, asked me if I would be the Director of Photography on his third year, final major project for his Creative Media Production BA (Hons). Camera work was something that I was confident with so I happily filled this role. This short film was used to bring awareness to homelessness and the struggles associated with it. We also made sure we recognised and brought attention to local charities with a focus on the homeless.

2.2) Augmented Obsession

During my first year at University I was able to go to Spain to help make a film with many of my fellow students across all the creative media departments in all three years of academic study. I worked on this project as a camera operator as well as having a minor role in the film as part of its supporting cast.

2.3) What the Duck?

This was the first project that I was apart of at University since starting in 2017. We travelled to Malham Cove where all three academic years of study collaborated to make a short film over a few days and it was used as a bonding exercise where I met some very good friends. I worked on this productions crew as one of its designated camera operators as well as being on the sound capture crew.

2.4) Academic Epidemic

This is a project I worked on for a fellow student, Sophie Knaus, during my first year at University. I was one of the camera operators on this project and had a minor role as part of the supporting cast. This was a short film made exclusively with my friends at Univeristy for one of our submissions.
