Filmmaking with SEND Children

During my career, I have been fortunate enough to be able to run and lead animation clubs designed specifically for SEND children. I led these Access All Areas clubs through my position as an Enabler at Eureka! The National Children’s Museum.

Animation is a good medium for SEND children to develop useful life and interpersonal skills. Filmmaking through animation can help SEND children to progress their individual development by teaching them vital life skills.

During these clubs, I was able to teach SEND children the important processes of filmmaking such as pre-production, through planning and making storyboards. I taught them about the production process and how to produce stop motion films by taking individual photos and collecting them together. I was able to provide and teach them the basic understanding of post-production and SFX by using green screens to create backgrounds, adding digital animations, sound and text to their films upon completion.

A few examples of their animated films can be found below.
